The drive back to Amman brings you into the city's ancient heart. The Roman Theatre below seats six thousand and still hosts performances today.

In the Church of St. George, a Byzantine mosaic map of the Holy Land dating to the 6th century covers the floor, the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of Jerusalem and the surrounding region. A short drive to Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land before his death. On a clear day the view across the Jordan Valley toward Jerusalem and the Dead Sea is one of the most quietly affecting in the region, a landscape that three of the world's great religions have looked at and called sacred.

The drive continues south through the King's Highway, one of the oldest trade routes in the world, arriving in Petra as the afternoon light turns the sandstone pink.
